I'd like to share a call night with y'all. And yes, this was a fairly typical call night for me.
Born yesterday while I was on call at the NICU:
- congenital diaphragmatic hernia, premie of course, because those defects are so easy to manage without additional complications. (this is when their abdominal contents are in their lungs because they have a defect in their diaphragm, so the lungs don't develop because there is no space for them.)
- super LGA baby (10+ pounds, mom has poorly controlled diabetes) with respiratory distress
- 26 weeker with a WBC of 88,000 (no that is not a typo, nor a lab error)
Another 25 weeker on deck to deliver but thankfully was able to hold off until I signed out. This is in addition to the 33 other NICU babies to take care of, some on ventilators, others with feeding issues that apparently require calls at 3:30 in the morning for spit up or green stomach contents.
Oh yes, along with the well nursery babies born overnight: highlight #1) teen mom with drug abuse and a warrant for arrest, highlight #2) Jewish family who would like to freeze dry placenta for eating, flipped out when I tested the babies suck reflex because they don't want his mouth touching anything but boobs, and asked about 50 questions during what was supposed to be my 5 minute newborn exam.
5 more days left of intern year. 1 more call. I can't believe a year has gone by already, but I am sure excited for Intern Week and to be a 2nd year!
